Mixed Club Nationals

Mixed Club Nationals, for anyone who doesn't know, is a big tourney towards the end of April. It is infact THE big tourney that ends the year, where all the big names of Irish ultimate come out to fight for the title.

It has been suggested that Open Club Sandwich enter this. There are positives and negatives to this, and I've tried to put a few of these down here.

Positives

-Exposure for the club
-Experience against some world-class teams
-A short term goal to work to
-A grand day out


Negatives

-We'd have to pay a fee to get registered as an official IFDA club
-Then pay the entry fee
-Getting badly beaten would be a given.
-Trouble fielding a full team of girls (for mixed ultimate you need either 3 or 4 girls on the pitch at all times)
-As it's mixed, only 3 0r 4 lads can play at once, so not everyone would get to play
-Proximity to Open Varsities
-We've still only had one training session



Myself, Orgy, Sandwich, Louis and ToyBoy discussed this at length today and our opinion is that entering this tourney this year would be a mistake, the level of play would be so high that it would be both disheartening and frustrating, and we would be better off focusing our efforts on Summer League.

If anyone disagrees and believes that we should enter a team, here is the place to discuss the issue.

Just a quick word Mandy, the club itself wouldn't have to pay a membership fee as simply put there is no such fee. However, each individual player would. I assume you're all a bunch of students (oh the halcyon days of youth) so it'd be €10 each.

Oh, thanks dude, I don't know where we got that idea from.


Other positive reasons to enter Mixed Clubs:

-a small tournament, coming last not being all that important
-cheap entry fee, cheaper than going anywhere else and likely to be in Dublin
-few Irish mixed teams actually train
-a good way to see where we are and where we want to be
-can be used as a yardstick to measure improvement in the next few years
-a tangible goal to work towards
-good experience for all involved
-gives girls lots of game time
-creates a hunger to make the team, so people will try harder in training
-a way of learning the way different mixed teams play and seeing if you can incorporate that knowledge to OCS
-a chance to promote the club in Irish Ultimate scenes


Well, ya'll heard Shimbo, fees aren't going to be an issue. The main barrier stopping Open Club Sandwich from entering Mixed Club Nationals is going to be the numbers of female players.

Has anyone been in contact with the Maynooth and NCI girls to ask them if they'd like to play this? Girls if you're reading this please get yourselves an account throw us some feedback! I've been thinking about this lots in the last while and it really is a great oppertunity.

well you know that most of the guys will be up for it. i hope the ladies are up for it

my memories from the night in question are slightly shadey.... what dates are we talking about, just so us 'out of dubliners' know what the story is?

April 26th.

I say if you have enough for a team you should go for it,
granted the level could be quite high but if you try hard at it your ultimate as a team will improve dramatically and will highlight the areas of your game that you will need to work on.
and who knows if you guys train hard coming up to it there is a chance you could take a scalp or 2

so i think thats now 2 female players for mixed club nationals, if we get 2 more we can send a line. its only 10 euro's per player and i think it would be a good plan so calling all female's not already playing in mixed, come play for open club sandwich. on that note has anyone heard from buiser, or will she still be away

Right so I emailed Marko, haven't gotten a reply but we're assuming that we're good to go for April 26th.

Katie (DCU experienced) said that she would play for us that weekend if needed, which means that the list of people confirmed to play looks like this

ToyBoy, you're getting a kick where it hurts from me the next time I see you. Quite possibly while wearing football boots. Sharp studded football boots. We've been through this, girls in ultimate are in very short supply, you're not allowed to go and scare them off!
